June 27, 2014
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The Kentucky men’s soccer team will face off with eight 2013 NCAA Tournament Teams, including the defending national champion Notre Dame, and will host 10 games during the inaugural season of the Wendell & Vicki Bell Soccer Complex, it was announced by third-year UK head coach Johan Cedergren on Tuesday morning.
“We really wanted to build a challenging schedule for the 2014 season,” Cedergren said. “With eight NCAA Tournament Teams and the defending national champ, we feel like this schedule is going to be one of the best in the nation. Conference USA is continually developing into one of the top leagues in the nation and our early non-conference slate will help get us ready for C-USA play.”
Kentucky will open its 2014 season with a pair of exhibition games, including making its annual trip to Northern Kentucky to face off with the Norse in an electric environment. After hosting Georgia State in the final tune-up of the preseason and traveling to Wright State for the season opener. UK will open a new era in program history by starting the home schedule in the Bell Soccer Complex with Belmont on Aug. 31.
UK will host a total of 10 games at the sparkling new Bell Complex, including 2013 NCAA Tournament foes East Tennessee State, Louisville, Old Dominion, New Mexico and Charlotte.
“Big Blue Nation is really going to enjoy the home schedule we have put together for our debut season at the Wendell & Vicki Bell Complex,” Cedergren said. “This is one of the nation’s best facilities and we are looking forward to showcasing it to our fans and 2014 opponents.”
UK’s non-conference schedule is highlighted by the matchup with in-state rival Louisville on Sept. 23. UK will also play two challenging tests in the Notre Dame Tournament Sept. 5-7 in South Bend, Ind., facing off with Indiana, the 2012 NCAA Champion, before facing Notre Dame – the 2013 NCAA Champion – to conclude the weekend.
