Men's Golf: Former Star Winings Takes Greater Cedar Rapids Open

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Former University of Kentucky men’s golfer Andy Winings has wrapped up another professional victory, claiming the Greater Cedar Rapids Open with a three-day score of 12-under-par 204, at the Hunters Ridge Golf Course (par-72) in Marion, Iowa on Sunday.

Winings (64-69-71--204) led right out of the gate, carding a tournament-low round of 8-under-par 64 in the opening round. The native of Brownsburg, Ind., continued the low scoring by posting a 3-under-par 69 in the second round and a 1-under-par 71 in the final round to seal the tournament crown. The former UK star finished one stroke better than Gregory O’Mahony (67-68-70--205) of Tequesta, Fla., and two strokes better than Steve Friesen (69-65-72--206) of Scottsdale, Ariz.

The victory was the second major win of his professional career. In July 2009, Winings posted a victory at the 76th annual Waterloo Jaycee Greater Waterloo Open Golf Classic. A senior on the 2008-09 team, Winings shot a 7-under-par 65 on both days of competition at Waterloo to win his first professional event.

Winings gathered several awards during his UK tenure, being named a PING All-American honorable mention in 2006 and second team All-Southeastern Conference in 2008 and 2009. The UK grad also was named an Academic All-SEC selection twice.

In his senior season with Kentucky, Winings played in all 12 events for the Wildcats, posting a team-low 72.72 season stroke average. Winings’ carded a season-low round of 65 at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate where he finished tied for 15th. Winings’ best finish of the year came at the Jacksonville University Invitational where he placed second in the tournament. Winings ended the year with more top-10 finishes (five) and top-20 finishes (10) than any other UK golfer.
