June 9, 2011
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- University of Kentucky men’s golf sophomore Cody Martin and incoming freshman David Snyder each carded a 1-over-par 217 to finish tied for seventh at the 100th annual 2011 Appalachian Wireless Kentucky State Amateur Championship on Thursday at Kearney Hills Golf Links in Lexington, Ky.
Martin, a native of Union, Ky., has had a pressure-filled week of golf after competing in United States Open Sectional Qualifying in Columbus, Ohio on Monday and then playing in the state amateur the past three days. The sophomore earned a 1-under-par 71 in the opening round Tuesday and followed that performance with an even-par 72 Wednesday to make the cut. Martin fired a 2-over-par 74 in the final round Thursday to secure his second consecutive top-10 finish at the event. He finished tied for fifth last year.
Snyder, who will be a freshman at UK this fall, played well at the state’s most prestigious amateur tournament. The native of Somerset, Ky., was 3-under-par heading into the final round after scoring a 2-under-par 70 in the opening round and a 1-under-par 71 in the second round. Snyder carded a 4-over-par 76 Thursday to finish at 1-over-par.
Martin and Snyder were joined by three other Wildcats that made the cut at the tournament. Junior Joseph Barr finished tied for 16th with a 3-over-par 219 after scoring even-par rounds of 72 the first two days and a 3-over-par score of 75 Thursday. Senior Mads Kristensen was high on the leaderboard after the first day with a 3-under-par 69, but finished the tournament at 10-over-par and tied for 53rd, while 2010-11 senior Chase Carpenter finished at 6-over-par and tied for 26th.
Four Wildcats missed the cut at the event, including 2010 runner up Seth Blann, who also played in US Open Sectional Qualifying on Monday after advancing through local qualifying in May. Sophomore Matthew Anderson and incoming freshmen Todd McDaniel and Will Bishop also missed the cut.
