May 22, 2014

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Senior Stephen Powers of the University of Kentucky men’s golf team was named to the Division I PING Southeast All-Region Team, it was announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America on Thursday.

A total of 157 players across six regions - Northeast, East, Southeast, Midwest, Central and West - earned all-region honors for 2014. Powers was named to the PING Midwest All-Region Team as a junior last season.

Powers leads Kentucky with the lowest stroke average on the team at 72.12. The Naperville, Ill., native has competed in all 11 tournaments for the Wildcats on the year, recording team-highs with six top-10 and three top-20 finishes. He has placed in the top 20 in all but two events this season. The senior’s best finish came at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate, where he placed tied for third at 3-underer par, 213 (76-69-69). In the NCAA Raleigh Regional, Powers finished in fifth place at 5-under par, 208, to help UK punch its ticket to the NCAA Championship. His 54-hole score of 208 was a season best. It marks the first appearance in the NCAA Championship since 2006 and eighth overall in program history.

Powers and the Wildcats begin championship play on Friday, May 23 at the Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan. Featuring a new tournament format, 30 teams and six student-athletes – who advanced from NCAA Regional Qualifying – will compete in an individual stroke-play format over 54 holes (Friday-Sunday, May 23-25). Golf Channel’s live coverage will begin on Monday, May 26, when the top 40 individuals and ties will compete in the fourth and final stroke-play round to determine the individual national champion. On Tuesday, May 27 (quarterfinals and semi-finals) and Wednesday, May 28 (finals), the low eight teams from the 54-hole qualifying will compete in match play competition to determine the team national champion.
