LEXINGTON, Ky. -- University of Kentucky men’s golf junior Brian Belden used an impressive score of 2-under-par 69 in the second round and a 2-over-par 73 in the final round to finish tied for third at the 2010 UK Bluegrass Invitational on Sunday. As a team, Kentucky (285-279-290-854) finished in fifth, only four strokes off the leader.
“This was the tightest tournament that we have had and I am so proud of my guys for fighting the way they did this weekend,” said head coach Brian Craig. “We were only four strokes off the lead and really had some good scores this weekend. This performance helped us gain some momentum as we head into the Southeastern Conference Championships next week.”
Belden (67-69-73-209), a native of Emmaus, Pa., played great golf all three rounds for Kentucky, never sitting out of the top-three. The top-three finish if the best of the season for Belden, who finished tied for first at the 2008 UK Bluegrass. The junior posted more birdies than any other player in the tournament, carding 17 in three rounds. Belden, who posted his lowest round of the season with a 67 in the first round, finished the tournament at 4-under-par, besting his season best 54-hole finish of 212 by three strokes.
Belden was followed by senior Jordan Blann (75-66-73-214) who finished the tournament tied for 17th. In the second round, Blann carded a 5-under-par 66, tying the lowest round of the tournament and the lowest of the season for Blann. A native of Bowling Green, Ky., Blann ended the tournament tied for first in par-five scoring at 6-under-par. The senior ended the tournament at 1-over-par.
Freshman Chase Parker (71-76-70-217) ended the tournament tied for 29th after a 1-under-par 70 in the final round. The native of Augusta, Ga., Parker ended the tournament at 4-over-par, breaking his season-low 54-hole low score of 219.
Senior Ben Fuqua (74-71-74-219) and sophomore Mads Kristensen (73-73-75-221) finished tied for 39th and tied for 57th respectively. Fuqua posted one of only 12 eagles scored at the tournament, finishing the tournament at 6-over-par. Kristensen ended the tournament 8-over-par.
Kentucky had five individuals play in the tournament with junior James Kania (70-72-73-215) leading the charge. Kania finished tied for 22nd, ending the tournament with a 2-over-par. Senior Derek Oldham (70-75-73-218) and freshman Seth Blann (71-73-76-220) finished the tournament in a tie for 34th and tie for 46th respectively. Blann led the tournament field in pars with 42, one more than Kristensen. Freshman Joseph Barr (79-69-79-227) and sophomore Chase Carpenter (74-78-77-229) also played as individuals in the tournament. Barr ended in a tie for 91st while Carpenter finished tied for 100th.
Murray State (284-278-288-850) won the team title by one stroke over Memphis (287-280-284-851). The individual title was claimed by Auburn’s John Stembridge (71-65-70-206) at 7-under-par, one stroke better then Jonathan Fly (70-69-68-207) of Memphis.
The fifth-place finish concludes the regular season for the UK men’s golf team that will now travel to St. Simons Island, Ga., to play in the SEC Championships, beginning Friday.

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The University of Kentucky men's golf team used an impressive 4-under-par score of 67 in the first round by junior Brian Belden to sit in a tie for fourth place after the opening round of the 2010 UK Bluegrass Invitational on Saturday.
Play was halted towards the end of the second round due to darkness and will resume Sunday morning at 8:45 a.m. ET. After the second round is finished the teams will move to the following hole to start the third and final round. After the second round is completed, all second round scores will be posted.
Kentucky (285) placed five players in the top 15 after completion of the first round. Belden sat in second place after his brilliant round of 4-under-par. The native of Emmaus, Pa., Belden sits one stroke off the overall lead in the second round. Belden is followed by freshman Chase Parker who finished tied for 15th heading into the second round. Parker, a native of Augusta, Ga., carded an even-par 71 to open the tournament.
Sophomore Mads Kristensen (Denmark) and seniors Ben Fuqua (Danville, Ky.) and Jordan Blann (Bowling Green, Ky.) wrap up the UK rotation. Kristensen sits in a tie for 42nd, posting a 2-over-par 73 while Fuqua finished in a tie for 63rd with a 3-over-par 74 and Blann is in a tie for 72nd with a 4-over-par 75.
UK has five individuals playing in the tournament, three of which posted top-15 scores in the first round. Junior James Kania (Haverford, Pa.) and senior Derek Oldham (Lexington, Ky.) finished at 1-under-par for the first round and sit in a tie for sixth while freshman Seth Blann (Bowling Green, Ky.) is tied for 15th with an even-par 71. Sophomore Chase Carpenter (Salyersville, Ky.) and freshman Joseph Barr (Versailles, Ky.) are also playing as individuals. Carpenter carded a 3-over-par 74 to sit tied for 63rd and Barr posted an 8-over-par 79 to sit tied for 112th after the opening 18 holes.
Miami University (Ohio) is represented on the top of both the team and players leaderboard after the first round. RedHawk Craig Voorhees carded the lowest opening round score of the tournament with a 5-under-par 66 and the RedHawks as a team sit in first by one stroke over UNC-Greensboro after a 3-under-par 281 to start the tournament.
