Powers Tied for Lead after Day One of USF Invitational

DADE CITY, Fla. – The University of Kentucky men’s golf team got off to a strong start on day one of the USF Invitational carding a 7-over-par, 295 and are in sixth place out of the 17-team field. No. 49 UK is eight strokes off the leader No. 43 South Carolina with a round of 18 scheduled for both Monday and Tuesday to conclude the tournament.

“What a round for Stephen Powers today,” head coach Brian Craig said. “It was windy and challenging and he played superb golf. All the guys hung in there and stayed on task. We have a ways to go in this event and I feel confident we will get better each day if we simply stick to the process.”

Powers played one of the best rounds of his career and is currently tied for first overall at 4-under-par, 68. After bogeying two of the first six holes, Powers was 1-over before sinking five birdies over the final 12 holes, including one on each of his final two, No.’s 8 and 9. The Naperville, Ill., native recorded a team-high six birdies on the day.

Junior transfer Ben Stow began the day on fire, charting birdies on three of his first four holes. The Salisbury, England native finished 2-over-par, 74 and is tied for 22nd overall.

Junior Cody tallied a team-best 14 pars on Sunday and turned in a score of 4-over-par, 76. Martin is tied for 43rd overall. Sophomore Will Bishop sank two birdies and is tied for 55th at 5-over-par.

Senior Chase Parker is tied for 86th at 10-over and Joseph Barr, who is competing as an individual, finished at 6-over and is tied for 63rd.
