Men's Golf Competing in USF Invitational
March 3, 2012
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Coming off a strong final round in its spring season opener, the University of Kentucky men’s golf team is looking to carry that momentum to Dade City, Fla., for the USF Invitational.
Playing in its second tournament of the spring season, the Wildcats will hit the links at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club (par 72, 7,153 yards) for the three-day tournament running from March 4-6. Hosted by the University of South Florida, Kentucky will be one of 17 schools competing in the event. Joining UK and USF is Arkansas State, UCF, Cincinnati, DePaul, Eastern Michigan, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, Florida State, Georgia, Louisville, Marquette, Middle Tennessee, North Carolina, Troy and Villanova.
“March has typically been the month where our team starts to play our best,” UK head coach Brian Craig said. “We were close last week to having a solid event in our spring opener. Hopefully, we will take a step forward this week and get this team playing like we are capable.”
Playing for the Wildcats this week is sophomore Cody Martin, freshman David Snyder, junior Joseph Barr, junior Chase Parker and sophomore Stephen Powers. Sophomore Matthew Anderson will compete as an individual.
The tournament will begin with 18 holes Sunday at 7:15 a.m. ET. Round two will begin at the same time Monday, and the tournament will finish on Tuesday with teams beginning their rounds off the first and 10th tees at 8 a.m.
Kentucky closed out the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate in impressive fashion one week ago, with Snyder (68) and Parker (67) each shooting career-low rounds en route to a combined score of 9-under-par in the third round. Snyder’s 54-hole total of even-par 216 was a career-best and put him in a tie for 10th, a career-best finish. As a team, UK’s final round of 285 was the second lowest third round of the tournament, and the fifth best round throughout the duration of the tournament.
Martin currently leads Kentucky with a stroke average of 73.17. With seven tournaments under his belt this year, Martin has four top-20 finishes, including three in the top five.
