Barr Leads Men's Golf to First Place After Day One

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Junior University of Kentucky men’s golfer Joseph Barr carded a career-best round of 66 (-5) in the first round of the Bearcat Invitational on Monday to lead the Wildcats to the top of the team leader board after 36 holes.
Paced by Barr, the Wildcats lead the Bearcat Invitational by three strokes after day one. Played at the Traditions Golf Club (par 71, 6,855 yards) in Hebron, Ky., UK carded a 2-over par 570 in the tournament’s first 36 holes. The Wildcats shot a 5-over par 289 in the morning round, but responded with a 3-under par 281 in the afternoon session, the best round of the day of all teams.
Barr was on fire throughout the day, recording 11 birdies and going 6-under on par 4s to enter tomorrow’s final round with a four-stroke lead. Barr’s previous collegiate-best 18-hole score was 69, which he had twice carded earlier this season.
Fellow junior Chase Parker put together an impressive two rounds of his own on Monday. Parker, the Wildcats’ scoring leader last year with an 18-hole average of 73.29, carded an opening round 1-over par 72 and followed it up with a 2-under par 69 Monday afternoon. Parker played the par 5s especially well, going 3-under par.
Sophomore Stephen Powers sits in third place on the Kentucky roster entering Tuesday’s decisive round, and is in a tie for 13th overall. Powers carded an opening round of 4-over par 75 before rebounding with an even-par 71.
Kentucky’s lone senior, Mads Kristensen, is in a tie for 32nd after shooting a 5-over par 148 on the first day.
Sophomore Cody Martin, who has finished in the top five in each of Kentucky’s opening three tournaments of the season, sits in a tie for 37th after the first two rounds. After shooting a 6-over par 77 in the first round, Martin rebounded with a 1-over par 72 to move him up from a tie for 45th to a tie for 37th.
The Bearcat Invitational will conclude Tuesday with 18 holes beginning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. ET.
Kentucky is playing a “B” team at the Bearcat Invitational in addition to its “A” squad that is in first place. The Wildcats’ “B” team will be listed in the results of the tournament, but will not factor into Kentucky’s record or national rankings.
The “B” team was lead on day one by junior Seth Blann, and sits in 12th place on the team leader board. Blann finished at 7-over par for the day, including a season-best 18-hole round of 70 in the afternoon session.
Freshmen David Snyder and Will Bishop each carded 8-over par rounds of 150 on Monday, and sophomore Matthew Anderson and freshman Todd McDaniel each finished at 10-over par.
Kentucky is competing against 13 other teams, including Austin Peay, Bowling Green, Belmont, Cleveland State, Dayton, Eastern Kentucky, Georgetown University, Marshall, Morehead State, Oakland, Ohio, Youngstown State and host school Cincinnati.
This is the first time Kentucky has played in the Bearcat Invitational under the tutelage of Craig.
