Powers, Parker Lead Men's Golf on Day One at SEC Championships

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky men’s golf team received two top-15 performances from freshman Stephen Powers and sophomore Chase Parker en route to finishing eighth after the first day of the Southeastern Conference Championships at Sea Island Golf Club on Friday.
As a team, the Wildcats scored a 13-over-par 293 to sit in eighth place. Kentucky is only one stroke behind Auburn, LSU and defending champion Georgia, who are all tied for fifth at 12-over-par. Florida leads the championship at 5-over-par 285, while Tennessee and Arkansas are tied for second at 6-over-par. LSU’s John Peterson leads all players after a 2-under-par 68.
Powers was Kentucky’s top golfer Friday in a tie for eighth after scoring a 1-over-par 71 in the opening round. The native of Naperville, Ill., carded two birdies in the opening round and was 1-under-par after nine holes. The freshman shot a 2-over-par 37 on the final nine holes.
Parker was also solid for Kentucky, finishing second on the team. The sophomore is tied for 15th at 2-over-par 72 after the first day. The native of Augusta, Ga., had one birdie for the day, while also earning 14 pars.
Senior Brian Belden and freshman Cody Martin are tied for 27th and 41st, respectively. Belden posted a 4-over-par 74 on the opening day with one birdie, while Martin shot a 6-over-par 76. Junior Mads Kristensen wrapped up the UK rotation, finishing tied for 58th with a 10-over-par 80.
The tournament will continue Saturday with the second round. Kentucky will tee off from the 10th hole beginning at 8 a.m. ET. Results from all three rounds can be found on GolfStat.com.
