Men's Golf Closes out Regular Season at Gary Koch
April 8, 2012
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky men’s golf team finished its regular season Sunday in the final round of the Gary Koch Invitational, moving up two spots on the team leader board to finish 13th at Old Memorial Golf Club (par 72, 7,389 yards) in Tampa, Fla.
As a team, the Wildcats, who are co-hosting the tournament along with Auburn, finished 13th at 47-over-par. The Wildcats were led by junior Joseph Barr who finished in a tie for 38th.
"We got off to one of the worst starts in recent memory yesterday," UK head coach Brian Craig said. "I am proud of the boys for the way they did not give up and kept battling back. Old Memorial was the firmest and fastest course we have probably ever played. This week will definitely help us in the future and, hopefully, it will pay off as we head into our SEC Championship in two weeks."
Barr finished the tournament at 8-over par, shooting a 3-over-par 75 on Sunday that featured one birdie and four bogeys. It is the second time this year that Barr has led or co-led the Wildcats in a tournament. Barr and fellow junior Chase Parker led Kentucky at the Bearcat Invitational in November with third-place finishes.
Sophomore Cody Martin, the Wildcats’ scoring leader on the season, finished tied for 48th at 11-over par.
Parker had the low round of the day for the Cats, shooting a 1-over-par 73 Sunday to move up 14 spots to a tie for 50th at 12-over-par. The Augusta, Ga., native improved by three strokes in each round after carding an opening round of 7-over-par on Saturday morning.
Freshman David Snyder, who has enjoyed a fantastic and consistent rookie campaign, finished in a tie for 63rd, while sophomore Stephen Powers finished 68th.
Junior Seth Blann, who played as an individual this week, finished 75th.
Also competing in the star-studded 15-team field alongside Kentucky and No. 3 Auburn, was No. 2 Alabama, College of Charleston, No. 23 Florida, No. 24 Florida State, No. 10 Georgia Tech, Georgia Southern, No. 15 North Florida, Pacific, South Florida, Toledo, UNC-Greensboro, No. 22 Virginia and Wake Forest. All rankings are according to the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings.
Kentucky will compete again April 20-22 at the Southeastern Conference Men’s Golf Championship at the Sea Island Golf Club (par 70, 6,898 yards) in St. Simons Island, Ga. Junior Chase Parker led the Wildcats in the conference tournament last season, firing a 5-over-par 215 to finish in a tie for 12th. Sophomore Stephen Powers also recorded a top-20 finish at the SEC Championship in 2011, going 7-over-par to finish in a tie for 19th.
