Men's Golf Finishes Fourth at Hootie at Bulls Bay
March 27, 2012
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Paced by a second-place finish from freshman David Snyder, the University of Kentucky men’s golf team came in fourth Tuesday at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate in Awendaw, S.C.
Played at the Bulls Bay Golf Club (par 72, 7,363 yards), Kentucky fought hard in the final round of competition in adverse conditions Tuesday, carding a 14-over-par 302 to finish at 5-over-par for the tournament. Snyder, a freshman from Somerset, Ky., recorded a 1-over-par 73 Tuesday and finished at 4-under-par for the tournament, tied for second place overall.
“How about David Snyder this week?” UK head coach Brian Craig said. “What a great week to have a coming out party and make a statement as a freshman. Overall, the entire team played very well. We had a chance to win on the last day in a solid field. We are a little disappointed that we did not finish better today, but this experience will absolutely help us.”
Snyder played consistent golf throughout the tournament, shooting a 2-under-par 70 on the first day, followed by a 3-under-par 69 and a 1-over-par 73 Tuesday. Snyder made the turn at 1-under-par after birdies on Nos. 6 and 9, but dropped back after bogeys on Nos. 12 and 15. Snyder’s three-day total of 212 is a career-low, and his top-two finish on the player’s leaderboard is also a career-best. Snyder has had 91.2 percent of his rounds counted toward the team score this year, the best rate on the team.
Sophomore Cody Martin finished 11th at 1-over-par for the tournament following a final round score of 6-over-par 78. It is the sixth top-20 finish of the season for Martin, Kentucky’s scoring average leader (72.85).
Junior Joseph Barr recorded a 3-over-par 75 in the final round to finish at 4-over-par for the tournament. Barr had an up-and-down round for the Wildcats, carding eight pars, four birdies, five bogeys and a double-bogey. The top-25 finish is the best for Barr this spring.
Sophomore Stephen Powers shot a 7-over-par 79 Tuesday and junior Chase Parker carded a 4-over par 76. Powers finished in a tie for 29th with a final score of 7-over-par, and Parker finished in a tie for 39th at 9-over-par.
Kentucky was joined in the 15-team field by Auburn, Augusta State, College of Charleston, LSU, Maryland, Ole Miss, North Carolina, N.C. State, South Carolina, Texas A&M, Virginia, Wake Forest, Wisconsin and Wofford College.
No. 3 Auburn won the tournament with a total score of 10-under-par. Just one team, Virginia, shot under par in the final round. Auburn’s Niclas Carlsson won the individual title at 5-under-par, defeating Snyder and Auburn’s Blayne Barber by one stroke.
The tournament draws its name from the band Hootie & the Blowfish and each year enjoys the support of Charleston native, Darius Rucker.
