Powers, Stow Lead UK on Day One at Bulls Bay

AWENDAW, S.C. – Three Wildcats posted rounds of under par on Sunday to lead the University of Kentucky men’s golf team into a tie for fifth place after one round of play at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate. Second round action begins Monday morning at 9 a.m. ET.

The Wildcats posted a team score of five-under par, 283, and only two strokes behind Missouri and South Carolina. The Tigers and Gamecocks sit atop the standings at seven-under par, 281, while College of Charleston (-6), Wake Forest (-6), Virginia (-5) and UK (-5) complete the top five. Virginia’s Derek Bard, South Carolina’s Ben Dietrich and College of Charleston’s Josh Lorenzetti are at the top of the individual leaderboard at four-under par, 68.

Rounding out the rest of the team standings were Auburn (-3), North Carolina State (-1), Charleston Southern (+2), Wisconsin (+5), North Carolina (+6), Duke (+8), South Carolina-Aiken (+9), GRU Augusta (+9) and Akron (+13).

“You can’t win it on the first day, but you sure can lose it,” said Kentucky head coach Brian Craig. “We are in a good spot after a solid round on a great Bulls Bay golf course. Tomorrow looks to be a different challenge with a totally different wind direction and blowing pretty hard. To be honest, I can’t wait to get back out there.”

Powers and Stow led the charge for Kentucky on Sunday by both firing rounds of three-under par, 69. The duo sit just one stroke behind the three players tied at the top of the leaderboard. Powers posted four birdies and an eagle on the day, while Stow recorded a team-best six birdies. Stow birdied four of his last six holes to end the day.

Sitting just a stroke behind Powers and Stow is junior Will Bishop after a two-under par, 70. Bishop is tied for 10th. The 18-hole score is a season best for Bishop, surpassing his previous best of 72.

Filling out the UK lineup were junior David Snyder and Cody Martin who recorded rounds of 75 (+3) and 77 (+5), respectively. Snyder is tied for 52nd, while Martin is tied for 62nd
