Football Team Hits Field for Spring Practice No. 7

April 4, 2012

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Fresh off a split scrimmage/practice session last Saturday when the Kentucky football team got in good work both offensively and defensively, Kentucky head coach Joker Phillips and the UK football team returned to the practice fields to continue the installation process of spring practice on Wednesday.

Phillips, who said Saturday after the scrimmage that he was pleased with how things went, echoed that again Wednesday. The head coach said the good impressions were reinforced after watching the scrimmage on video.

“I thought that we threw and caught the ball a little bit better and it showed up on film,” Phillips said about the scrimmage Saturday. “You see one drop here live and what you see on film is that he probably didn’t have a chance to get to it. So, I thought that we threw and caught the ball better. We pushed the ball down the field. I thought that our line protected on offense and I think we tackled a little bit better on defense when we had opportunities.”

Phillips and the coaching staff added more to the playbook during Wednesday’s practice.

“We actually installed a little bit more today,” Phillips said.  “Today, we installed some more of our offense and defense but we weren’t really good at our assignments. Once you start thinking about that your fundamentals go and techniques go.”

The UK head coach talked in length Wednesday about how happy he was for UK men’s basketball head coach John Calipari and the team on winning the National Championship on Monday. Phillips said as a Wildcat he understands when one team on campus wins, every team on campus wins.

“First of all, I want to congratulate Coach Cal on what those guys have done,” Phillips said. “Amazing job he's done. I got the chance to sit down with him Saturday after the first game and it was just amazing what he's done.

“I'm a Kentuckian and been in this program a long time and I'm one that truly believes when one wins, we all win. It's a win for everybody in this department. So I'm excited about what happened this last weekend.”

Phillips said every sports team on campus can benefit not only from the men’s basketball team’s success but from any type of success for UK Athletics. Phillips said it is all about branding and getting the UK logo in front of people all over the country.

“Our logo is out there,” Phillips said. “Kids got to see our brand and I think that is important. Our baseball team is No. 1 in the country right now. Our brand is being seen all across the country right now. I think that’s important. One thing that Mitch Barnhart has done is bring a family atmosphere here. Everybody is rooting for each other because we all want our brand out there. It helps every program in this department.”

UK will resume spring practice Friday, before holding its first true scrimmage of the spring Saturday.
