Dec. 27, 2010
LEXINGTON, KY – The UK men’s basketball team swept the Southeastern Conference’s weekly awards this week as Doron Lamb was named SEC Player of the Week and Brandon Knight was named the SEC Freshman of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday.
Lamb, a 6-4 guard from Queens, N.Y., scored 32 points in leading the Wildcats to a win over Winthrop. He went 11-of-12 from the field, making 7-of-8 3-pointers to break Kentucky’s freshman record of 31 points set by Jamal Mashburn on Feb. 3, 1991, against Georgia. It marks the third time that Lamb has scored at least 20 points in a game this year. He set career highs for points, field goals and 3-pointers. Lamb’s seven 3-pointers are tied for the most by a Southeastern Conference player this season.
Knight, a 6-3 guard from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., tallied 21 points, five rebounds and two assists in the win over Winthrop. He recorded his fifth 20-point game this season and has made at least two 3-pointers in six-straight games. He has scored at least 14 points in six-straight games and has scored in double figures and hit a three-pointer in 10 of 11 games this season.
The awards were Lamb’s first and Knight’s second this season and the fourth and fifth for Kentucky. It marks the first time this season a school has swept the league’s weekly honors and the first time since November 23 last season when UK’s Patrick Patterson and John Wall were named the player and freshman of the week.
Additionally, Lamb was named National Freshman of the Week by The Hoops Report.
Kentucky returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 28, hosting the Coppin State Eagles. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. ET tip and can be seen live on Fox Sports South.
