Oct. 17, 2009

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Sophomore Andy Burns’ three-run home run, senior Marcus Nidiffer’s two-run homer and junior Lance Ray’s three doubles highlighted a Kentucky baseball intra-squad scrimmage, played on Saturday afternoon at Cliff Hagan Stadium.

The scrimmage was included in UK Baseball Parent’s Weekend and consisted of six and a half innings of a scrimmage. UK split into a Black and Blue team, with freshman lefty Taylor Rogers starting the game on the mound for the Black team and sophomore right-hander Braden Kapteyn starting on the bump for Blue.

Burns and Nidiffer hit the two homers in the scrimmage, with Burns’ coming as a three-run shot over the left-center field fence, hitting halfway up the video board. Nidiffer, a three-year starting catcher, hit a two-run homer over the right-center field fence. Junior infielder/outfielder Neiko Johnson, a native of Stone Mountain, Ga., added two infield singles, one double into the right-center field gap, a hit by pitch, an RBI and two stolen bases.

Ray, a junior college transfer from Las Vegas, N.V., had five plate appearances for the Black team and hit three doubles.

Freshman catcher Luke Maile added one single, two RBI and a stolen base, also throwing out Navarro Hall as he attempted to steal second base. Hall, a junior outfielder, ripped a triple that painted the first-base line, scoring on Nidiffer’s homer, also contributing a single, hit to the opposite field, on an eight-pitch at bat.

Freshman catcher Michael Thomas, a right-handed hitter, doubled off the top of the monster in right field and senior center fielder Keenan Wiley charted two singles and a stolen base. Thomas, a native of Elizabethtown, Ky., also added a one-out single to the opposite field in the seventh inning.

On the mound, Rogers and Kapteyn started, with right-hander Walter Wijas, left-hander Mike Kaczmarek, lefty Jon Carlson, right-hander Jordan Cooper and righty Kyle Jackson pitching at least one inning.
