Dillon Tate Pitches No. 16 UC Santa Barbara to Series Clincher

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- All-America flamethrower Dillon Tate fired seven shutout innings, striking out nine, leading No. 16 UC Santa Barbara to a 11-0 win over Kentucky to clinch the three-game series, on an overcast Saturday afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.

Kentucky (2-3) fell behind after a three-run inning in the third, with UCSB also plating a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, charting a four-run inning in the bottom of the seventh and a two-run inning in the eighth.

The Wildcats were led at the plate by a three-double game from junior centerfielder Kyle Barrett. JaVon Shelby added a double and a triple and Evan White had a single in the ninth.

UK starter Zack Brown (0-1) pitched 4.2 innings in his first start of the year, allowing seven hits and three earned runs, walking three and striking out a career-high six. Sophomore Robert Zeigler took with two outs and two on in the fifth, getting out of the jam. Zeigler worked 1.1 innings, allowing two earned runs. Freshman Zach Pop made his collegiate debut in the seventh inning and Taylor Martin also pitched in the eighth inning.

Tate (2-0) fired seven strong innings, allowing four hits – all for extra bases – walking two and striking out nine. UC Santa Barbara (6-0) then used Kyle Nelson, Connor Baits and Chris Clements in relief.

The series will resume on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on the UK Radio Network, with Dick Gabriel voicing the action. Fans in Central Kentucky can hear the game live on WLAP 630-AM and online at UKathletics.com.

UCSB opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning, as Cameron Newell and Robby Nesovic singled with one out and Dalton Kelly doubled down the leftfield line, scoring the duo. Kelly then stole third base and on the collision with third baseman Thomas Bernal, the ball bounced off Kelly and into the UCSB dugout, allowing Kelly to score the third run of the game.

The Gauchos added to their lead in the fifth inning, as Newll drew a walk and Nesovic singled. Peter Maris then singled home Newell for a 4-0 lead.

UCSB plated four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for an 8-0 lead and plated three runs in the eighth for a 11-0 advantage.
