Cross Country To Race In Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic

LOUISVILLE, Ky. –The University of Kentucky cross country teams will get back to competition when they race in the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic at the E.P. “Tom” Sawyer Park on Saturday. The women’s team enters this weekend’s meet coming off a pair of second place finishes to open the season.

The men will be running an 8,000-meter course, while the women will compete on a 5K course. The men’s No. 1 race will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by the women’s No. 1 race at 10:15 a.m. The men’s No. 2 race will start at 10:45 a.m. and the women’s No. 2 race will begin at 11:30 a.m. The men’s No. 3 race will begin at noon and the women’s No. 3 race will start at 12:30 p.m. All times are Eastern.

“The races are going to be very competitive both individually and for the top teams,” Kentucky women’s cross country coach Hakon DeVries said. “The national caliber field will be a great opportunity for us to race against some of the teams we will see later in the championship portion of our season.”

Cally Macumber returns to action following her individual victory at the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational last week with a 5K time of 17:29.13.

Senior Chelsea Oswald and junior Allison Peare both added top-10 finishes in Virginia a week ago. 

On the men’s side, senior Luis Orta has picked up where he left off last season leading the way for the Wildcats yet again this year. The 2011 First Team All-SEC performer got his 2012 campaign underway with an individual win backed up by a top-20 performance in Virginia last week.

The women’s team heads into its third race of the year ranked as the No. 4 team in the Southeast Region by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association up three spots from a week ago. The men check in on the same poll at No. 15.

"We are excited to compete against some of the top teams in the country and to get a better sense of where we stand in our region,” men’s cross country coach Jason Dunn said. “It will also be a great chance for us to preview the NCAA Championship course, where we hope to be racing on November 17th"

The Wildcats will return to Sawyer Park on Oct. 13 for Pre-Nationals before the site hosts the NCAA championships on Nov. 17.
