UK Throwers Take Both Discus Titles at Billy Hayes Invite

May 7, 2011

LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Kentucky senior throwers Colin Boevers and Mary Angell made the most of a last minute tune up for the Southeastern Conference Championships, winning the men’s and women’s discus throw at the Billy Hayes Invitational in Bloomington, Ind., on Saturday.

Boevers, the reigning SEC champion in the discus throw, threw a season-best mark of 58.39m/191-07 to claim the win. The season- and event-best throw extends the seniors SEC-leading mark, ahead of Auburn freshman Stephen Saenz who owns a season-long mark of 183-05.

Equaling Boevers performance in the discus, Angell won the event on the women’s side with a long throw of 51.25m/168-02. The senior holds a career-best mark of 53.57m/175-09, set earlier this season at the Sea Ray Relays.

“The throwers have had many ups and downs this year, like any other,” assistant coach of throwing events Doug Reynolds said. “We’ve said from the beginning we are here to compete for championships, and with this being the last meet before championship season it is encouraging to see the entire group producing at such a high level at one time.”

More impressive for the senior duo is their continued improvement in the shot put. Boevers grabbed a runner up finish in the event with a career-long toss of 17.14m/56-03.00, which moves him up to sixth in the SEC. Boevers had thrown his previous career-best mark of 16.91m /55-05.75 in Louisville, Ky., during the Kentuckiana Border Battler on April 9. Angell also produced a career-best toss with a mark of 15.36m/50-04.75 to finish in fifth position. Angell’s toss moves her into fifth place on UK’s all-time outdoor shot put list, just behind current injured teammate Jennifer Svoboda, and seventh overall on the current SEC rankings.

“In addition, it was great to see out current athletes competing side by side two of the all-time great UK throwers in Andy Fryman and Chase Madison,” Reynolds said. “I think the reunion was a great reminder of the tradition they are a part of as well as the legacy they will create over the upcoming weeks.”

Senior Heather Smith was also in action for the Wildcats and followed the trend of season-best marks with a throw of 52.97m/173-09 to finish ninth in the hammer throw. Smith had a previous season-best mark of 51.16m /167-10, also at the Border Battle in Louisville, Ky.

Kentucky will be back in action at the SEC Outdoor Championships May 12-15 in Athens, Ga.
