Muffet Rises to the Top as UK Throwers Thrive at Tiger Track Classic

April 4, 2010

Lexington, Ky. -- University of Kentucky track and field star Ashley Muffet, who faces lofty expectations at the entrance of every meet, performed brilliantly in only the third week of the 2010 outdoor season, placing ahead of all collegiate athletes in the women’s shot put and discus throw at the Tiger Track Classic on Saturday.

Muffet led two other Wildcats who finished in the top four of the women’s shot put, only separated by second place finisher Brittany Cox of Middle Tennessee State. On the second consecutive day, Muffet made the most of a single completed throw with a toss of 52-08.75/16.07m on her opening attempt. In third position was junior Jennifer Svoboda who finished with a season best mark of 50-03.50/15.71m just behind her personal best mark set last May at the Jesse Owens Track Classic with a mark of 51-11.75/15.84m. Mary Angell finished in fourth place with a throw of 47-08.00/14.33m.

The discus throw competition played out with many similarities to shot put as Muffet stood above every collegiate athlete, only behind Nike athlete Aretha Thurmond who broke the facility record by over two meters. Muffet trailed teammate Mary Angell heading into her third attempt but stepped it up earning a mark of 52.42 to secure her position behind Thurmond. On her final throw she furthered her mark to 175-04/53.44m moving further away from Angell by more than 10 feet. Mary Angell set a personal best mark of 164-09/50.23m on her first attempt to finish third while Svoboda finished just outside the top 10 with a throw of 135-09/41.39m.

Colin Boevers followed in line with the women’s success with a second place finish in the men’s discus throw and the top collegiate mark as the first place finisher was unattached. On his fourth attempt Boevers constructed his best throw of 182-09/55.71m setting a new personal best set previously two weeks ago in Orlando, Fla.

UK relay teams found consistent performances at the Pepsi Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla. with four teams in total finishing in the top ten, three women and one men’s team. Two fifth place finishes were earned by the men’s 4x800m relay team and the women’s 4x200m relay with time of 7:31.39 and 1:35.23 respectively.

The Kentucky track and field team will return to action close to home at the Kentuckiana Border Battle in Louisville, Ky., next Friday, April 10.
