UK Competes at Three Meets this Weekend
The majority of Kentucky athletes will begin competition on Friday at each venue. Links to live stats and webcasts of the meets are available on the track schedule page at UKathletics.com.
This is the 81st year of the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays hosted by the University of Texas. The storied meet draws top sprinters, hurdlers, relay teams and thousands of spectators from around the nation at the beginning of April each year. The Wildcats will face athletes primarily from other power track conferences such as the Big 12, Big Ten and the ACC.
The Stanford Invitational is in its 34th year and traditionally has been a showcase for distance events. The unique distance carnivals are the big draw each evening featuring some of the premier distance athletes in the country. Other schools with athletes competing include Arkansas, Wisconsin, Georgetown, Notre Dame, Baylor, Florida State, Tennessee and BYU along with most PAC-10 schools.
The Cats are familiar with the Tiger Track Classic in Auburn having competed at the meet last season. Auburn will also host the 2008 SEC Outdoor Championships this season at the Hutsell-Rosen Track. The Classic will feature athletes from several nationally-ranked programs, as UK will join host Auburn?s No. 9-ranked men and No. 17-ranked women, the No. 3 Tennessee men, the No. 16 South Carolina women and the No. 23 Clemson men. Southeastern Conference teams from Alabama and Vanderbilt will also have athletes competing.
Last weekend at the Yellow Jacket Invitational in Atlanta, seven Cats and a relay squad earned regional qualifying marks. On the men?s side, UK earned four regional qualifying marks as senior Andy Fryman notched two (shot put and hammer throw) while juniors Mikel Thomas (110 hurdles) and Rashaud Scott (shot put) each nabbed one. For the women, the 4x100 meter relay team took home a qualifying mark while three Cats garnered individual qualifying marks: freshman Jennifer Svoboda (shot put), sophomore Kristin Smith (hammer throw) and classmate Jenna Martin (400m dash).
