Nine Wildcats Earn 13 All-America Honors
March 17, 2014
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Nine Kentucky Wildcats earned a total of 13 All-America honors for the 2014 indoor track and field season, as announced by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Monday following last weekend’s NCAA Championships.
The UK women’s team had three first-team nods and three second-team honors plus a relay. The men’s team had one first-team member and one second-team member.
First-team honors were given to those who placed in the NCAA Championships’ top eight in an event or qualified for an eight-person final. Second team honors were earned by those who finished between ninth and 16th place.
Dezerea Bryant led the way for Kentucky with two first-team honors and a second-team nod. Bryant was the first Wildcat sprinter to ever win the 200 Meters National Championship, and she was runner-up in the NCAA 60m dash, .01 behind the winner. Bryant ran the opening leg of UK’s Second-Team All-America 4x400m relay.
Bryant is now a 12-time All-American.
Kendra Harrison was UK’s other female First-Team All-America selection, having placed fourth in the 60m hurdles at the 2014 NCAA Championships, also just .01 seconds behind the National Champion. She earned second-team honors in the 60m dash. Harrison is now a 9-time All-American.
Brad Szypka was UK’s lone male first-team honoree, while Matt Hillenbrand picked up second-team honors, having placed 10th in the mile. Szypka earned first-team honors for the first time in his career, having picked up a second-team nod last year outdoors.
Hillenbrand is now a two-time second-team member having earned the same accolade last season in the 1,500m.
Allison Peare, Kayla Parker and Leah Nugent all earned Second-Team honors. Peare was ninth in the mile, while Parker and Nugent placed 10th and 15th in the 60m hurdles respectively. The women’s 4x400m relay of Bryant, Nugent, Sha’Keela Saunders and Kenyattia Hackworth placed 12th and earned second-team honors.
Peare and Parker both earned the second All-America honors of their careers. Peare made the First-Team last season as part of UK’s distance medley relay, while Parker was a Second-Team member for the 100m hurdles in 2013.
The Wildcats will begin the outdoor season this weekend at the Baldy Castillo Invitational in Tempe, Arizona.
