Three Wildcats Earn Indoor Track All-SEC Honors

LEXINGTON, Ky -
Three Kentucky track and field team athletes earned Southeastern Conference Indoor Track and Field Awards. One male and two female Cats were selected by the conference's head coaches as All-SEC squad members, the league office in Birmingham, Ala., announced.
Senior Ashley Trimble finished first in the women's pentathlon at the conference meet to earn All-SEC first team honors. The award is the third of Trimble's career after earning All-SEC second team honors in the pentathlon last year and winning a first-team nod as a member of UK's distance medley relay team in 2006.The versatile athlete set the UK varsity pentathlon record with a personal-best total of 3,991 points to earn an NCAA provisional mark. Trimble's performance at the SEC Championships ranks her 16th nationally in the multi-event going into the final week of the indoor season. The pentathlon showcases multi-athletes in the 60m hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot put and 800m run.
Hurdles specialist Mikel Thomas earned All-SEC second team honors after finishing second in the men's 60m hurdles at last week's SEC Championships. The conference award is the first of Thomas' career. The senior is ranked sixth in the country with a 60m hurdles time of 7.74 that broke the UK varsity record Thomas set last season.
Junior Kristin Smith won her first career conference honor in the women's weight throw. Smith finished second in the event with a personal-best throw measuring 61-11.50 to earn All-SEC second team honors. The Wildcat's distance ranks 30th in the country and second all-time at UK.
The UK men's squad is ranked 15th nationally this week heading into the NCAA Indoor Championships. The Championships are hosted by Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas on Fri. Mar. 13 and Sat. Mar. 14.
Junior Rondel Sorrillo is the only Wildcat with an automatic mark to compete in the NCAA Championships. At-large selections for the championships will be made by the NCAA selection committee this week from the pool of athletes with eligible provisional marks.
