Women Collect Seven Points on Day Two of SEC Championships

Sorrillo wins heat, advances to 60-meter final

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- T wo Kentucky women’s shot putters collect six points in total to put the women’s team in seventh position with 14 points after day two at the Southeastern Conference Championships Saturday at the Randal Tyson Track Complex.

Ashley Muffet in her second throw of the women’s shot put posted a mark of 16.73m/53-8.50 as she finished fourth, scoring five of the team’s six points from that event. Jennifer Svoboda picked up one point with a throw of 15.09m/49-6.25 as she finished eighth in the event. Mary Angell finished just outside of the top eight with a throw of 14.91m/48-11.

An additional point was added for the women in the final event of the day when freshman Cally MacCumber placed eighth in the 3,000m run with a time of 10:02.84.

On the men’s side, Rondel Sorrillo, who entered the meet ranked second in the nation in the men’s 60-meter dash, coasted into the event’s final in 6.66, winning the second heat of the preliminaries that included four Wildcats stacked side by side. Kwasi Obeng, Alex Williams, and Justin Austin finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, in the heat but failed to advance.

Sorrillo will compete tomorrow in a much anticipated final that features three NCAA automatic qualifiers including national leader Jeff Demps of Florida and Marcus Rowland of Auburn.

Competing in his first SEC Championship, Darryl Bradshaw, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., set a personal-best time of 8.19 in the 60m hurdle preliminaries. Bradshaw’s time placed him in seventh position in the prelims and secured a spot in the final Sunday at 1:45 ET.

Senior Jenna Martin posted her best time in the 400m dash since the 2008 NCAA Indoor Championships with a time of 53.82 to finish in fourth place and advance her into the final Sunday at 2:35 ET.

In the women’s and men’s mile, UK pushed three into the final tomorrow at 2:15 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. ET respectively. For the women, senior Katherine Peterson claimed the final spot with a personal-best time of 4:53.13. For the men, junior Josh Nadzam finished in the eighth position with a time of 4:08.18 and freshman Patrick McGregor set a personal-best time of 4:09.74 to round out the event’s top 10.

Kentucky looks to make up ground on the leaderboard Sunday, the final day of the SEC Indoor Championships, after qualifying athletes for six slots in finals on the men’s side.

Competition begins at 11 a.m. ET with Kristin Smith in the weight throw. Smith is currently second in the SEC women’s weight throw with a mark of 20.57, just .02m away from first.
