Martin Tabbed as SEC Female Runner of the Week
Martin earned the honor for her performance in the 400 meter dash at the Tyson Invitational last weekend. The sprinter broke a decade-old school record held by Roshell Russell (52.90) in the event with her time of 52.72. Martin?s time attained a provisional mark, is tops in the SEC this season and ranks second nationally.
In the 200m dash Saturday, the swift sophomore?s time was just 0.03 seconds shy of her personal best that ranks fifth in the UK record books. Martin rounded out the weekend as the opening leg of women?s 4x400m relay team that finished ninth earning her a second provisional mark for the weekend.
In addition to the indoor 400m record, Martin already owns the varsity record for the outdoor 400m dash set last spring. The second-year student athlete also holds the UK freshman records in the event ? both indoor and outdoor ? that she established last year.
This is the fifth week during the indoor season, and third in a row, that the Cats have won a weekly honor from the SEC. Martin?s honor is the first for the women?s squad this year. Last week freshman Derrick Locke collected the male freshman athlete of the week. Two weeks ago, Locke?s classmate Brendan Ames won the male freshman honor while senior John Richardson claimed the SEC?s male runner of the week title. Earlier in the season, junior Rashaud Scott earned SEC male field athlete of the week award.
Martin and the UK women stand 22nd, while the Wildcat men rank 14th in the latest U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association polls.
The Wildcats have a week off from competition before competing at the SEC Indoors in Fayetteville starting Friday, Feb. 29.
