Track Cats Fare Well at SEC Quad Meet
(Jan. 20, 2001) -- Against three of the strongest track and field programs in the nation, the University of Kentucky finished strong with sixfirst-place finishes, six seconds and five thirds in a Southeastern Conference Quad Meet hosted by UK at the Nutter Field House onSaturday, January 20.
Leading the way for the Cats again were freshman Jeff Chakouian and sophomore Simidele Adeagbo. Chakouian won his thirdconsecutive shot put competition, notching his second NCAA automatic qualifying distance with a throw of 63-00.25. His throw wasnearly one foot farther than Reese Hoffa of Georgia, who finished second in both the 2000 SEC Indoor and Outdoor Championshipsand fourth at the NCAA Outdoor championships.Adeagbo won the women's long and triple jumps for the third straight time, again earning NCAA provisional-qualifying marks ineach. With a 20-03.50 in the long jump, she added two inches to her previous personal best, and she came in just under her bestwith a 41-04.25 in the triple jump.
Other top performances on the women's side included a school record toss in the 20-pound weight throw of 54-06.50 bysenior Rebecca Wedel, a personal best by freshman Olivia Reynolds in the shot put, a first-place finish in the mile run and asecond-place finish in the 800-meter run by freshman Caity Phillips, a strong second by senior Michelle Williams in the 60-meterhurdles and a runner-up spot in the triple jump by freshman Ronda White.
The men got an excellent performance from freshman David Freeman, who finished second in the 800 meters with apersonal-best time of 1:51.25. In the mile, sophomore Thomas Morgan (4:15.30), sophomore Jack Morgan (4:16.03) and freshmanJames Doaty (4:17.14) had strong races, with Morgan notching a season best. In the high jump, senior Andrew VanderWagenjumped a season-best 6-10.25 to give the Cats another first-place finish, while junior Bill Powers earned his own top honor with a58-01.25 mark in the 35-pound weight throw.
In the women's team standings, No. 3 South Carolina scored 165 to Georgia's 135, Kentucky's 127 and Tennessee's 68.Seventh-ranked Tennessee claimed the men's crown with a score of 162.50, followed by South Carolina's 134, Georgia's 92.50and Kentucky's 82.
The Cats return to action in one week when they split up to travel to both the Air Force Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo.,and the Arkansas Invitational in Fayetteville on Friday, Jan. 26-27.
