Rondel Sorrillo Captures Second Place in 100m Dash

Muffet Scores Again, Places Seventh in the Women’s Shot Put

EUGENE, Ore. -- Rondel Sorrillo captured a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash final with a time of 10.09 to pick up eight points for Kentucky at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., Friday.

Sorrillo’s finish was the highest for the Wildcats in the 100m since Tim Harden claimed the 100m dash title in 1995 and the second-highest finish all time in the event for a Kentucky athlete. The senior sprinter shares the school-record time in the event with Harden at 10.05.

“We wanted a victory,” assistant coach for sprints Erin Tucker said. “There were one or two technical things that probably cost him the victory, but getting second place at the National Championships is always a good thing. Going into this meet, the biggest thing was to improve in every event we ran, and we have already done that in one final with two finals left. If we improve in those, we're going to be very happy when we leave here.”

Sorrillo gained eight points for his second-place finish, moving the team into a tie for 21st on the men’s side with two scoring opportunities remaining. Sorrillo will be a part of both events left for the men which includes the 200m dash and the men’s 4x100m relay.

“Im happy with my performance," Sorillo said. "I didn’t get the result I wanted, but it was the best I could have done with the mistakes I made. Coming in second place means I didn’t win and that’s basically what’s on my mind. I want to win.”

In just his second year at Kentucky, Sorrillo added his seventh All-America honor after gaining his sixth at the 2010 Indoor Championships in March.

Ashley Muffet finished in seventh place with only a single throw completed at 53-06.50/16.32m on her third toss. Muffet earns her second All-America honor in addition to her All-America honor in the discus throw discus on Wednesday. Muffet has a season-best mark of 53-11.25/16.44m and holds the Kentucky record in the women’s shot put at 54-02.50. This was the senior’s last competition as a Wildcat and leaves as one of the most decorated women in the school’s history.

“Ashley has been a tremendous athlete for us and no one has had as much interest and passion as she has,” head coach Weber said. “She has been very successful and has had some disappointments but at this high level those can be very close. Ashley’s contributions in three different events have been very valuable and will be almost impossible to replace.”
