DAY 1: SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships

On day one of the SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Precious Nwokey and Ashley Newby began the women’s heptathlon event where they earned a season best record and a second overall standing after four of the seven events.

On the first day of SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championship competition, the Kentucky track and field team became acquainted with Tom Black Track and the humid Tennessee air with a morning practice and pre-meet preparations. The team felt the temperature reach a hot 90 degrees as the women’s heptathlon competition got underway.

Precious Nwokey (Houston, Texas) and junior Ashley Newby (Maplewood, N.J.) were the sole athletes to compete for the Cats on Thursday’s opening day as they competed in the women’s heptathlon.

Nwokey started the heptathlon with two second-place finishes. The first earned with a 13.58 time in the 100-meter hurdles and the second coming from a successful attempt in the high jump of 1.75m (5 feet, 8.75 inches). After earning 1,955 points, Nwokey then added 546 more points with her 10.25m (33 feet, 7.50 inches) throw in the shot put. 

Ashley Newby’s performance in the high jump proved to be her best performance of the year. Improving her personal season record to 1.66m (5 feet, 5.25 inches), Newby finished the event tied for fourth. She contributed 572 points to her running total with a tenth-place finish in the shot put and 895 points in the hurdles with a time of 14.60 (1.7).

After their 200m dash performances, in which Nwokey ran a 24.53 and Newby a 26.63, the teammates wrapped up the days heptathlon competition as they return tomorrow evening at 5 p.m. Competition will resume with the long jump, javelin and 800m dash.

After four events Precious Nwokey has a total of 3,431 points seating her in second place, while Ashley Newby holds the tenth-place spot with 3,016 points.

The Kentucky track and field team returns to Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium at 10 a.m. when Kristin Smith, Heather Smith and Ashley Muffet compete in the women’s hammer throw.
