The University of Kentucky men’s track and field team began competition at the 2012 Southeastern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday with freshman multi-event athlete Daniel Buckles representing the Wildcats in the heptathlon at Nutter Field House in Lexington, Ky.

Buckles, a freshman from Leitchfield, Ky., was competing in just his second heptathlon of his collegiate career after competing in the event last week at the SPIRE Division I Collegiate Invitational in Geneva, Ohio.

Buckles started off the heptathlon with a career-best time of 7.60 in the 60-meter dash, registering 681 points toward his seven-event total. The seven events that make up the heptathlon are the 60m dash, long jump, shot put, high jump, 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1,000m run.

In the second event of the heptathlon, the long jump, Buckles finished 10th with a mark of 6.25m/20-06.25 to give him 1,322 points through his opening two events.

Buckles recorded a mark of 10.65m/34-11.25 in the shot put before closing out the day’s competition with a career-best height of 1.85m/6-00.75 in the high jump. Buckles and the rest of the competitors will close out the heptathlon with the 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1,000m run on Saturday beginning at 2:50 p.m. ET.

Kentucky did not have an athlete entered in the women’s pentathlon Friday, the only event completed on the day. The pentathlon was won by Arkansas junior Makeba Alcide with a score of 4,126 points. The victory came at an opportune time for Alcide, as she was celebrating her 22nd birthday Friday. The UK women’s team will begin its competition at noon Saturday with the women’s pole vault.

Saturday’s events will begin at 11 a.m. ET with the men’s weight throw and men’s high jump. Day two will finish with the men’s and women’s 3,000m runs at 6:55 p.m. The championships will conclude Sunday with the finals of many of the events. Sunday’s competition will start at 11 a.m. with the women’s weight throw, women’s high jump, women’s triple jump and men’s pole vault. The final event of the championships will be the men’s and women’s 4x400-meter relay at 4:40 p.m.

The SEC Indoor Championships will air as part of a 90-minute show on ESPNU on Sunday, March 11 from 5-6:30 p.m. ET. ESPN3.com will stream the meet live from 2:05-7:30 p.m. on Saturday, and from 1:25-5:00 p.m. on Sunday. For fans wanting to watch the action prior to the start of ESPN3’s webcast, UKathletics.com will live stream the portions of the meet not on ESPN3.com.
