Famurewa Opens Season With School-Record Weight Throw
Jan. 16, 2015 -
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky track and field junior Rebecca Famurewa started 2015 strong by breaking the school record and winning the weight throw at the Kentucky Invitational inside Nutter Field House on Saturday.
Famurewa flung the weight 67-feet, 11.5 inches/70.21 meters, which is in the No. 3 weight throw mark in the U.S. this year, although it is extremely early in the season.
And she wasn’t the only Wildcat to earn a victory on a laid back Friday evening as Kentucky’s men’s distance medley relay also emerged victorious.
The team of Tim Layten (1,200M), Naija Omari (400M), Keffri Neal (800M) and Lou Styles(1,600M) ran 9:57.62, which is also the fastest time in the nation this year. Only a handful of universities have competed in that event this season so far.
Kentucky's youthful women's DMR of Michelle McKinney, Alisha Adair, Jill Weston and Katy Kunc finished third at the Kentucky Invitational with a time of 11:50.01
Logan Bryer placed fourth in the men’s weight throw with a collegiate best mark of 59'1.25"/18.07m, nearly two feet better than his previous best.
Brandi Walker placed 11th in the weight throw with a best mark of 53’11.75”/16.45m.
The Kentucky Invitational will continue on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. with a more action-packed schedule of events in store. Many of Kentucky’s returning All-Americans will compete as they look to shake off rust accrued over the winter break ahead of next weekend’s Rod McCravy Memorial, also at home, which will feature one of the best regular-season fields in recent memory.
