Swimming and Diving take on Auburn in Dual Meet

Nov. 1, 2012

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky swimming and diving teams welcome Southeastern Conference opponent Auburn Friday afternoon for a dual meet. The meet, originally scheduled for 2 p.m. ET, will begin at 1 p.m. with one men’s and one women’s diving event before the swimmers get started at 2 p.m. at the Lancaster Aquatic Center.

Kentucky’s men and women each picked up their first wins last weekend in Columbia, Mo., defeating Southern Illinois and will be competing for their third consecutive weekend. The Wildcats will have a difficult test ahead of them this Friday with the defending SEC champion Auburn Tigers coming to town.

“Auburn has some of the best swimmers and divers in the NCAA so we are looking forward to testing ourselves against them,” said head swimming coach Gary Conelly. “I’m interested to see if this will be another step forward for us.”

The Tigers come into Friday’s meet riding an incredible hot streak. The men’s team (2-0) has not lost a single event this season in 29 attempts in their two meets this season. The women’s team (3-0) has picked up 28 individual wins this season.

The Kentucky divers will also be in for quite a battle this weekend with the Tigers. Each team has performed well this season, and this meet gives UK another chance to compete against some of the best divers in the SEC.

“We are looking forward to going up against Auburn this weekend,” said head diving coach Ted Hautau.  “They are one of the top teams in the SEC every year in diving and this presents a good challenge for us. Both the men’s and the women’s events should provide some good diving as we are pretty evenly matched up with them.”

The matchup with Auburn will be the first dual meet between the two squads since the 2004-05 season with Auburn’s men holding a 4-3 all-time advantage over UK, and the Auburn women owning a 5-2 record all-time.
