Five School Records Fall, Pulskamp Second in 100-fly

Feb. 21, 2009

AUBURN, Ala. -

Five Kentucky records fell on the third night of competition at the 2009 SEC Championships held in Auburn Friday night. UK had four individuals sketch their name atop the record books and the women’s 400-medley relay broke a four-year old record to highlight the third night of competition.

Junior Megan Pulskamp earned her first career medal with a spectacular second-place finish in the 100-butterfly. Pulskamp improved upon her third-place seed from the preliminary rounds tapping just ahead of Florida’s Julianee Lago who finished in 52.17. The junior broke her own school record time set earlier in the day when she clocked in at 52.10 for an NCAA ‘B’ time standard. Earlier today she broke the school record time, she held, with a time of 52.46.

On the men’s side, junior Elvis Burrows shined in the 100-fly for his first-career top-eight finish in any event. Burrows tallied eighth place after breaking his own school record time with a tap of 46.72. Earlier in the day the junior set the school record with a time of 46.81. Burrows’ time is an NCAA ‘B’ qualifying time standard and led three UK athletes in the top-16 of the event. Senior Shane Eliason placed 15th in the event for the first top-16 finish in this event in his career. He clocked in a time of 48.26. Junior Alex Forbes placed 16th overall with a time of 48.27. Both Eliason and Forbes set career-best times in the preliminary heats with Forbes also achieving an NCAA ‘B’ time standard in the morning’s race.

Sophomore Tyler Reed led three UK men in the 200-freestyle. Reed captured fourth place in the event behind a school record time of 1:34.71. The time is good for an NCAA ‘B’ time standard and breaks his own school record time he set earlier in the day. He finished just a mere touch off of being a medalist as the second and third place finishers finished in times of 1:34.02 and 1:34.09, respectively.

Junior Kyle Greene also captured a top-eight finish for just the first time in his career. Greene notched a time of 1:36.21 to finish eight in the event. In the morning’s qualifying round he tapped in a career-best and NCAA ‘B’ time standard with a finish of 1:35.63. Sophomore Reinhardt Strijdom capped off the event with his first career top-16 finish when he clocked in 16th in the event in a time of 1:37.97. Strijdom joined his teammates with earning a career-best time in the preliminary rounds with a time of 1:36.90.

In the 100-breaststroke, freshman Grant Cooksey earned an impressive 14th place tie with a 55.07 finish in the event. Cooksey earned a 16th place seed after setting a career-best time in the preliminary rounds with a 55.03 time, and then improved two spots in his first career finals to aid the Wildcat cause.

On the women’s side, sophomore Lindsey Graessle placed 15th overall with a time of 1:02.51 for her second straight top-15 finish in the event at the conference meet.

Eliason was back in action in the 100-back scoring a 15th place finish with a time of 48.44. Earlier in the day he scored a UK school record with a 48.33 time to qualify for the finals. Eliason has now placed in the top-16 in the 100-back in each of his four seasons.

On the women’s side in the event, sophomore Chatham Penrod touched in 12th in the event clocking in at 54.11. Once again, Penrod was also another Kentucky athlete who scored a school record in the qualifying rounds with a time of 53.92.

Kentucky’s women set the third relay school record of the 2009 SEC Championships with a brilliant 400-medley swim. UK’s team of Penrod, Graessle, Pulskamp and sophomore Jenna Newsome clocked in a time of 3:38.91 for sixth place. The time is an NCAA ‘B’ qualifying clip and beats the 2005 school record of 3:40.26.

To wrap up the night the men’s 400-medley relay placed sixth overall with a time of 3:14.03 achieving an NCAA ‘B’ time standard in the process. The team was comprised of Eliason, Cooksey, Burrows and Reed.

Diver Jessie Snowden was unable to compete in the platform diving event due to an injured wrist today. A year ago she placed second in the event en route to her SEC Freshman Diver of the Year award. The sophomore scored top-16 finishes in both springboard events in the previous two nights, including second on the one-meter Thursday.

After three days of competition, Kentucky’s men rank seventh and the women eighth. Florida remains atop the leaderboard on the women’s side, with Auburn out in front on the men’s.
