Rifle Opens Season with Win over N.C. State

Oct. 9, 2009

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Led by a match-high 589 in air rifle from senior Ashley Jackson, the Kentucky rifle team opened the 2009-10 campaign with a 4626-4525 win over N.C. State, Friday afternoon at UK’s Barker Hall.

“It was an exciting day,” UK head coach Harry Mullins said. “We hosted the match on the internet, had a live blog and we had some good performances, yet we didn’t finish with the kind of scores we needed. That is certainly not due to a lack of effort and we had a great performance from almost everybody, we were just a little short on scores.”

Jackson posted team bests in air rifle and smallbore, finishing with a 581 in smallbore, including a 199 in prone. Tom Csenge had UK’s second-best air rifle score, posting a 582 and finishing with a 576 in smallbore. Sophomore Ethan Settlemires, the 2008-09 Great American Rifle Conference Rookie of the Year, finished with a 575 in smallbore and a 578 in air rifle. Senior Jen Pason totaled a 580 in air rifle, with senior Leslie Angeli finishing with a 564 in smallbore.

“We have had great training matches and great training performances, yet we were just a little short on our target goal,” Mullins said. “The team was just a little too tight and excited for the first match and we will take some time to reflect and refocus and we should be right there on Sunday.”

On the white team, Pason had a 574 in smallbore and Angeli finished with a 577 in air rifle. Sophomore Megan English finished with a 581 in air rifle. UK freshman Katie Fretts totaled a 580 in air rifle and a 576 in smallbore, with Sarah Broeker contributing a 578 in air rifle.

“Katie Fretts had a good day today as well as Stacy Wheatley shooting in her first smallbore match,” Mullins said. “With a day of rest, we will get right back into the grove.”

UK will return to action Sunday, hosting Memphis at Barker Hall.
