No. 17 Kentucky Returns Home for Matchup with Vanderbilt

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Following a weekend where the team split a pair of matches, No. 17 Kentucky men’s tennis returns to the friendly confines of the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center on Friday, March 18, to faceoff with Southeastern Conference foe Vanderbilt. The match is set for 5 p.m.

Kentucky enters the matchup at 11-3 on the season with a 3-1 SEC record. UK also boasts a pristine home record, now 8-0 in contests in Lexington this season.

Last time the Cats took to the court, the match came down to the wire, with the two sides splitting the points as UK dropped the doubles point but took three of the five completed singles matchups. The fate of the contest came down to the second court, where freshman Ryotaro Matsumura was in the midst of the third set. Matsumura once again showed mental fortitude, rallying from behind a game to take the third set, 7-5, for a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory.

Both Matsumura and sophomore William Bushamuka notched ranked singles victories in the Alabama win. They also both remain ranked as two of the top singles players in the country, with Bushamuka at 23rd and Matsumura ranked 108th.

Vanderbilt comes into Friday ranked No. 68 in the country with a 9-8 record, while currently 0-2 in SEC action. The Commodores’ Daniel Valent enters the match ranked as the 54th best player in the country in solo action and pairs with Pen Binet to make the country’s 76th most dangerous combo in doubles play.
