RIO DE JANEIRO – Kentucky Track and Field Class of 2015 Alumna Leah Nugent qualified for the 400-meter hurdles final while representing Jamaica at her first Olympic Games Tuesday.

The 2015 NCAA and Southeastern Conference Bronze Medalist ran a personal-best 54.98, placing third in the third and final semifinal. She had the seventh fastest time of the semifinal round.

Nugent’s PR rounded out a strong day at the Games for the Wildcats. Nugent’s training partners Jasmine Camacho-Quinn and alumnus Rondel Sorrillo advanced to semifinals in the 100-meter hurdles and 200m respectively during the Tuesday morning session.

Camacho-Quinn, completing her freshman season at the Games, and alumni Nugent and Sorrillo all train at Kentucky under head coach Edrick Floréal’s direction.

After running rounds each of the past two days in what many consider the most painful event in the sport, Nugent and the rest of the Olympic 400m hurdles finalists will take Wednesday off. The final is scheduled for Thursday night at 9:15 p.m. ET. With two Americans in the final the race is likely to be shown live during the NBC primetime window.

The networks of NBC own the broadcast rights for the Olympic Games in the United States. All track and field at the games will be streamed live via
nbcolympics.com and the NBC Sports app.
