Kentucky Duo Heads to USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships

Doubles Draw

LEXINGTON, Ky. – After gaining an automatic bid to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Collegiate Championships with its doubles title at the Ohio Valley Regional Championship on Oct. 19, the No. 9 ranked pairing of Mami Adachi and Aldila Sutjiadi are set to compete for a national championship on Nov. 12-15.

Adachi and Sutjiadi have earned the third seed in the tournament, and will have a bye in the first round.  Their first match will be at 4 p.m. ET on Thursday, when they will face the winner of the match between Nevada’s Blaga Delic and Sheila Morales, who are ranked No. 27 in the nation, and Ohio State’s Miho Kowase and Anna Sanford.

"I am excited with the experience that Mami and Aldila are about to gain," commented head coach Carlos Dradá.  "Playing well in a tournament of this caliber can only bring positives to any student.  Our players are well prepared and are ready to give their best during the event."

Kentucky also had a doubles pairing in the tournament last year, when Sutjiadi paired up with Nadia Ravita after the two picked up a regional championship title.
Before that, the Wildcats had gone without being represented in doubles action since 2006, when Kim Coventry and Joelle Schwenk advanced to the semifinals of the National Indoor Championships.  The pair went on to garner All-American honors by earning a No. 5-8 seed in the NCAA Championships.

The best finish for UK at the National Indoor Championships came in 1988, when Sonia Hahn and Tamaki Takagi finished as the runners-up.

Adachi and Sutjiadi cruised past the competition at the Ohio Valley Regional Championships, taking an 8-4 win over Memphis’ Berres/Paul, an 8-0 blanking of Evansvile’s Crasta/Drazyan,and  an 8-4 win against Xavier’s Brinker/DiLorenzo in the matches leading up to the semifinals.  UK faced No. 1 Vanderbilt’s Sydney Campbell, who is one half of the No. 4-ranked team in the nation, and Fernanda Contreras Gomez, taking down the Commodores, 6-4, 7-6(6).  Kentucky then went up against another pairing from the 2015 NCAA Championship team in the finals, handily downing Courtney Colton, the other half of the No. 4 pairing with Campbell, and Astra Sharma in 6-3, 6-4 sets.

Kentucky’s lead doubles duo has a record of 9-1 in fall competition this year, with its only loss coming in the national championship final of the Oracle/ITA Masters.  At the season-opening tournament, Adachi and Sutjiadi took down No. 8 Matea Cutura and Christine Maddox of Pepperdine, 6-4, 6-1 in the first round.  They advanced to the finals after another upset with a win over No. 3 Maegan Manasse and Denise Starr from California, 7-6(3), 6-3.

The National Indoor Championships will be a 20-team doubles draw at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.  Automatic entry includes champions from the USTA/ITA Division I Regional Championships, winners of the USTA/ITA National Small College Super Bowl, as well as the consolation champions and doubles finalists from the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships.
