Kentucky-Arizona State Postgame Quotes

Head Coach Matthew Mitchell on Kentucky’s victory over No. 15 Arizona State

Opening Statement …
“Incredible game and an unbelievable effort by both teams. I just thought that Arizona State just physically dominated us for a large part of the game, especially in the first half. I just thought it was all about toughness and we didn’t answer and play as tough as we could. But then that big third quarter was huge. It got us back in it and then it looked like we faded again, but at the end we were able to get some pressure and I thought Makayla Epps, Taylor Murray and Janee Thompson were able to get up and make some things happen in the press, then Evelyn Akhator had a big steal. Just a great, great experience for our team and a lot that we learned from the game. It’s always great when you win and get a good lesson.”

On Makayla Epps’ performance …
“I thought that the early foul trouble really bothered her and she hadn’t really played much or had any real game action yet this year. So she was trying to get her footing and trying to get into a rhythm. When she finally made a bucket I settled her down a little bit and then I tried to get her going defensively and she started to do that a little bit, but she is just a really talented player. Arizona State had her defended really well a few times and she just made some incredible individual plays. So really happy for her. She has been through a lot and had a lot of adversity with the suspension. I thought she really showed up and played well, particularly in the second half.”

On the team giving him good effort today and getting a win against a team that went to the Sweet 16 last year …
“Well, we had a good day from a hustle standpoint. With a young and inexperienced team, only scoring 15 points in the first half can be pretty deflating and they could have really started doubting themselves. But we really thought that if we could get tough, we had done a good job defensively. If we could guard them – they were awfully tough to guard – but we could have success. We have to just stay really humble and hungry because we were fortunate to win this one today. It could have really gone in Arizona State’s favor easily.”
