LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Varsity dance team member Randi Bishop has advanced to the final round of the Athlon Sports Spirit Sideline Contest. The contest, which is based on votes, is a spirit competition for cheerleaders and dancers across the nation among the various football divisions. Bishop won her round with an overwhelming 24,000 more votes than the second place contestant.
Bishop has been a member of the University of Kentucky varsity dance team for four years. The Wildcat Dance Team performs at all home football and basketball games and has competed at three United Spirit Association National Competitions, placing second in 2006 and third in both 2007 and 2008. The team has also performed at the Music City Bowl in Nashville, Tenn., and at Southeastern Conference tournaments. They are currently planning to compete in the 2009 United Dance Association National Collegiate Competition in Orlando, Fla., on Jan. 16-17.
The Knoxville, Tenn., native discovered her love for dance when she joined the seventh grade dance team at Farragut Middle School. Her passion for dance continued throughout high school.
Bishop is a fourth-year senior at the University of Kentucky, where she is majoring in nursing and has made the Dean’s List. She is scheduled to graduate in May of 2009. Her community service efforts include participating in the University of Kentucky’s DanceBlue, UK Fusion and volunteering at homeless shelters in the Lexington area.
Bishop is representing the University of Kentucky and the SEC in the Athlon Spirit Contest, and is the only dancer to have made it the final round of the competition. The winner receives $1000 for their team, as well as JVC equipment and a photo spread in the 2009 Athlon Sports Magazine. The winner is decided by the number of votes placed by fans.
