Schlafer Promoted to Executive Associate Director of Athletics

Sept. 12, 2014

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Jason Schlafer, senior associate athletics director for corporate and university relations at the University of Kentucky, has been promoted to executive associate director of athletics for external operations, UK athletics director Mitch Barnhart announced Friday.

"Jason is an effective administrator and a valued member of our leadership team," Barnhart said. "He has been instrumental in fostering our relationships with Nike and our university partners, securing new multimedia and licensing partnerships with JMI Sports and Fermata and supporting our track and field and swimming and diving programs. I am excited for Jason, Michelle and their family. I look forward to working with him as we pursue the goals we have for UK Athletics."

As executive associate AD, Schlafer will continue to expand his current responsibilities. Schlafer's corporate role has included development of the recent marketing and multimedia rights agreement with JMI Sports valued at $210 million. Schlafer engaged Fermata Sports as the new partner for licensing UK Athletics trademarks, logos and products, which generates several million dollars annually. Schlafer also manages relationships with corporate entities such as Nike, Gatorade and Coca-Cola.

Schlafer is a primary contact between UK Athletics and the university administration, including the Board of Trustees, President's office and senior administration.

Within UK Athletics, Schlafer has administrative responsibility of the Wildcat track and field, cross country and swimming and diving teams. In addition, he oversees UK Athletics' marketing, sports video, media relations and multimedia operations.

Known for his social consciousness, Schlafer responded to Barnhart's goal of expanded influence for UK Athletics by developing and leading service/educational trips to Ethiopia, which have created life-changing experiences for dozens of Wildcat student-athletes in recent years.

An 18-year veteran of UK Athletics, Schlafer began his career as an intern in the marketing office.  After graduation, he worked two years in private business before returning to UK Athletics as assistant director of marketing and licensing. His hard work and efficiency resulted in promotions to associate director of marketing and licensing, director of marketing and licensing, assistant athletics director, associate AD, senior associate AD and now executive associate AD.

"I want to thank Mitch Barnhart and President (Eli) Capilouto for affording me this opportunity," Schlafer said. "From student-athletes to coaches to staff, it's a pleasure to work with such a dedicated and talented group of people. I'm excited about the future of my alma mater and honored to work at a university and athletics department so dear to me."

Schlafer and his wife, Michelle, have three sons - Wyatt, Gabe and EJ.
