Rob Mullens Named New AD at Oregon

Cat Scratches: Mullens flew at UK, will soar at Oregon thanks to roots

EUGENE, Ore. -- Former Kentucky deputy director of athletics Rob Mullens has been named the new athletics director at the University of Oregon, it was announced at a press conference on Thursday afternoon by Oregon president Richard Lariviere.

“I am ecstatic for Rob and his entire family,” Kentucky athletics director Mitch Barnhart said. “Rob has meant a remarkable amount to the University of Kentucky over the last eight years and the entire UK family is elated for him to have this opportunity. He is a tremendous visionary, a tireless worker and a true superstar in collegiate athletics. The University of Oregon made an exceptional hire in Rob Mullens and we wish him and his family nothing but the best as they embark on this new and exciting time.”

“It is a bittersweet day for UK Athletics,” said UK President Lee T. Todd, Jr. “We are thrilled for Rob Mullens as he has this opportunity to pursue his professional dream of becoming an athletic director. However, we will miss him. Rob has meant so much to UK Athletics over the years, helping us create a ‘clean and competitive’ culture within the department. Though I wish him and his family the very best in Oregon, his presence and leadership will be sorely missed on our campus.

“This also is a great compliment to Mitch Barnhart’s leadership. Rob is now the third individual that has worked under Mitch at UK that has been hired as an Athletic Director at a BCS university.”

A native of Morgantown, W.Va., Mullens recently completed his eighth year at the University of Kentucky, serving as executive associate director of athletics from 2002 to 2006 and deputy director of athletics from 2006-10. During his time at Kentucky, Mullens had a large hand in a highly-successful era of Kentucky athletics, assisting Barnhart with the direction of the department and serving as chief operating officer. Mullens focused on creating a culture committed to broad-based excellence, supported by a streamlined, stable financial structure for UK athletics. In addition, Mullens has been involved with IMG in exploring innovative and creative options for facility enhancements. Most recently, Mullens was directly involved with the tradition-rich UK men’s basketball program, functioning as the day-to-day administrator.

Before coming to Kentucky, Mullens was a member of the Maryland athletics administration from 1996-2001, holding titles including athletics director for business, senior associate AD for internal operations and executive senior associate AD/chief of staff.

Mullens graduated in 1991 from West Virginia with a degree in business administration. He earned his master’s degree in 1993 while serving as a student assistant in the Mountaineers’ business office. After achieving his graduate degree, Mullens served as an intern in athletics administration at Kentucky, before earning a full-time position at Miami (Fla.) in 1994, beginning his career as assistant business manager. He was later promoted to senior business manager.

Mullens, 40, married the former Jane Pearson of Tacoma, Wash., and the couple has two sons, Cooper Robert and Tanner Patrick.
