The University of Kentucky Athletic Training Camp Staff invites you to join us for an exciting, yet educational experience in learning about athletic training. This camp is designed for high school students interested in gaining skills as student athletic trainers. The program will address the current concepts in Sports Medicine with presentations provided by various certified athletic trainers. Each day will consist of lectures, demonstrations and laboratory sessions with emphasis on prevention, recognition, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. Student athletic trainers are a vital part of the sports medicine field. Our goal is to expose the high school student to the field of athletic training/sports medicine through presentations, lectures and hands-on labs provided by various certified athletic trainers. At camp the student will learn about the anatomy in regards to muscles and bone structure, taping/treatment of common athletic injuries and basic injury evaluation. The camper would learn about vital record keeping, athletic training room necessities, game procedures and have light discussion and exposure on athletic training and other sports medicine careers. Through the camp the high school student who has little or no previous athletic training experience will build their athletic training ability. An emphasis will be placed each day on the prevention, recognition, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. The student will be introduced to a cadaver lab and increase their awareness of emergency procedures/heat illness. The program will address the current concepts in Sports Medicine.


The camp program is geared toward high school students. Topics will include, but are not limited to:

Taping Techniques (injury, prevention and specialty), Emergency Procedures, Care for Heat Illness, Sports Nutrition, Injury Evaluation, Rehabilitation Techniques, Anatomy and Injuries (ankle, foot, elbow, wrist, forearm, hand, knee, and shoulder), Stretching Techniques, Splinting Techniques, Athletic Training Profession, Cadaver Lab (upper extremity), Concussions, Bloodborne Pathogens, Physicals, and Wound Care.

Deposit /Registration Fee

Overnight - $335.00
Commuter or Four/more overnight from same high school - $285.00

Registration includes presentations, meals, lodging, camp picture, t-shirt, materials and additional take-home items.

Deposit will be applied to camp balance.

CPR/AED certification – $25.00

**All campers will be restricted to the University of Kentucky campus. Those campers who drive to camp will turn in their keys upon arrival.
A non-refundable deposit of $50 or full payment is due with the registration form by June 10, 2009.


Check-in: 4pm - 5pm
Check-out: with CPR - 3pm; without CPR - 1pm


A confirmation, map and additional information will be sent via e-mail (if address is provided) or mailed upon receipt of deposit/full payment and registration form.

Refund and Cancellation Policy

All monies except $50 deposit will be refunded if camper provides documentation of non-attendance due to illness, medical injury or family death. Campers who leave camp early due to above reasons will receive pro-rated refund of operating expenses not yet paid. We reserve the right to cancel programs due to insufficient enrollment. This notice will be made by June 19th. Registered participants would receive a full refund.

Special Assistance

Persons requiring special assistance should contact the Camp Director at least one week prior to the start of camp.


Presentation sheets, camp notebook, t-shirt, pen, colored pencils and any other camp supplies are provided.

Camp Staff

University of Kentucky Athletic Training Staff, Team Physicians and Educational Faculty.

Classroom/Lab Location

All events will be held on the University of Kentucky campus mainly in the E.J. Nutter Training Facility.

Lodging & Meals

Campers will be assigned to one of the Kirwan-Blanding dorms located across the street from the E.J. Nutter Training Facility. Campers must bring their own bed linens, blanket, pillow, toiletry items, towels and alarm clock. All meals will be served either on campus or catered in.

Recommended Attire

Campers should dress in casual attire tennis shoes, t-shirts and appropriate shorts. A jacket/sweatshirt is recommended.


Canned drinks and snacks will be available for purchase. Campers will visit the University of Kentucky Campus Store.

Special Activities

Campers may choose to participate in several athletic training activities and be eligible for prizes. A camp picture will also be taken.
