UK Athletics Announces Society of Character Honorees

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Twelve University of Kentucky student-athletes will be inducted into the Frank G. Ham Society of Character in a ceremony to be held Saturday, February 19, at UK's Center for Academic and Tutorial Services.
The Society of Character recognizes Wildcat student-athletes who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to academic excellence, athletic participation, personal development, career preparation and serving as a role model. The SOC was founded during the 1998-99 school year and is named in honor of Ham, a long-time UK administrator.
This year's induction class is listed below in alphabetical order.
Mary is a senior track and field athlete who participates in discus and shot put. After transferring from the University of North Carolina, she was a Mid-East Regional semi-finalist in both events. For her work in the classroom, she has been named to the Academic Honor Roll by the Southeastern Conference and the All-District Academic Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Ann is a highly decorated junior on Kentucky's volleyball team. Through the University Scholars Program, she is earning an undergraduate and Master's degree concurrently. She has been named CoSIDA Academic All-District and Academic All-SEC. Ann devotes a great deal of time to community service and has twice been named to the SEC Volleyball Community Service Team and was a semi-finalist for the 2010 Wooden Cup, an award given to athletes "who have made the greatest positive influence in the lives of others."
Meagan is a senior outfielder on UK's softball team. She is a three-year member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and has also been named State Farm Student-Athlete of the Month. Meagan's respected leadership led to her being named team captain. She is an active participant in community service and is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, a national honorary leadership society. After her softball career, she plans to attend dental school.
Ke'Undra is a senior member of the track and field team. She excels in triple jump and was a semi-finalist at the Mid-East Regional in the event in both 2008 and 2009. Ke'Undra is as dedicated in her studies as she is in athletics and has been named Academic All-SEC three times from 2008-2010. For three years, she has played a vital role in CATS Cultivating Character, a character program by UK student-athletes at a local elementary school.
Colin is the senior leader of the Wildcat throwers, participating in the shot put and discus. He was the 2010 SEC Champion in discus and earned All-American honors for his efforts. This past summer, Colin traveled to Belgium with Athletes in Action, a group that seeks to share faith through the ministry of athletics.
Marcus is a senior center on the football team who has earned the respect of his teammates with his maturity and leadership. He has been very active in the community and in sharing his faith and was named to the SEC Community Service Team. Marcus' diligent work in the classroom has made him a four-year member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll. His team attitude both on and off the field have been an inspiration to fellow football players.
DeAndre is a junior guard on the basketball team. DeAndre is not the most vocal player on the team, but he leads by example with his work ethic and perseverance. That perseverance translates to the classroom, where he devotes tireless effort. DeAndre is also a role model in the community, where he generously volunteers his time with at-risk youth.
Storey is a junior gymnast who has tallied five event honors in her career, three on uneven bars and two on balance beam. Serving as a team captain, she was named Most Outstanding Performer on Bars last year. For her leadership and commitment, she received the Best Teammate Award at the team banquet in 2010.
Laura is a senior forward for UK soccer who was named second team All-SEC after the 2010 season. She has been recognized throughout her career for her academic achievements, which include: Freshman Academic All-SEC, two-time Academic All-SEC, and a five-time member of the Dean's List. Laura is respected as a leader by her teammates and has been consistently involved in outreach throughout her time at UK.
Whitney is a junior gymnast who has excelled both inside and outside of competition. She became the first UK event specialist to advance to the NCAA Championships since 2006 when she tied for medalist honors with a 9.900 on the vault at the NCAA Central Regional Championships. She has 13 total event titles in her career and earned a role as team captain this season. Whitney also was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in 2010.
Kayla is a senior swimmer and team captain. She has balanced her athletic career with both a busy academic and service schedule. Kayla owns the highest GPA on the swimming and diving team and also logged nearly 30 hours of community service during the season. She leads the Wildcats in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events.
Megan is a senior catcher for Kentucky softball who has been named All-SEC three times for her play on the field. For her work in the classroom, she has been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll three times and has also received recognition as a State Farm Student-Athlete of the Month. She plays a vital leadership role on her team and is a team captain. Megan is also a nominee for the Lowe's Senior Class Award, given to student-athletes with demonstrating excellence in four areas: community, classroom, character and competition.
