Kentucky Wildcat Mascot Finishes Fourth Overall, Second in Video
Jan. 15, 2010
ORLANDO, Fla. -- The University of Kentucky mascot appropriately named, Wildcat, finished fourth overall and second in video at the Universal Cheerleading Association's Division 1A Mascot National Championship on Friday.
The fourth overall finish is the highest ranking of any UK mascot in the 11 years UK has been participating in the event.
"It is a pretty cool thing," said UK senior and the main man behind the Wildcat uniform, Ross Turner. "We have an awesome spirit program here at the University of Kentucky anyway. We try to work as hard as we can and bring a lot of energy into anything that we do."
The competition is broke into two parts. In order to qualify for the event in Orlando, the mascot must make a short one- to two-minute video showing crowd involvement and other special things that are expected out of college mascots. After the videos are viewed by the judges, the mascots are ranked and then invited to come to Orlando for the final judging. Wildcat was ranked second after the video judging. The video portion of the competition is worth 50 percent of the overall score.
The final 50 percent is voted on by the judges at Disney studios in Orlando after the invited mascots perform a minute and a half skit. The skit is judged according to how the mascot gets the crowd involved, has overall character development, prop creativity and animation, among others.
Wildcat finished seventh last year at the competition. This year, the competition was won by Boulder Chip from the University of Colorado. A full listing of results can be found below.
The UK dance and cheerleading teams are also in Orlando for the national competition. The cheerleading finals are not until Sunday, but the dance team has a semifinal in the jazz category on Saturday.
