UK Cheerleaders Seek 15th National Championship
The University of Kentucky cheerleading squad will head to Disney’s Wide World of Sports in Orlando this weekend to compete in the Universal Cheer Association National Championships. The team looks to take home their unprecedented 15th title and 11th in the last 12 years.
Kentucky’s blue squad, made up of the 20 cheerleaders you see at men’s basketball games, will be making the trip to the championships, taking place January 13-15. Sixteen will compete and the other four will serve as alternates.
Based on a submitted in to the UCA in November, UK tied for first in the South Regional qualifier with Alabama and earned a paid bid to the championships and automatically advance to the finals being held on Jan. 15. There are 25 teams competing for the title this year. Sixteen of those will participate in a semi-finals round Saturday night with the top seven joining the nine automatic qualifiers in the finals on Sunday.
The Wildcat mascot will be joining the cheerleaders on the trip and will compete in the College Mascot National Championships on Sunday. The Wildcat goes up against nine other mascots, including three from the Southeastern Conference.
Kentucky has dominated the cheerleading competition, winning championships in 1985, 1987, 1988, 1992, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005.
